Morning After Dark
Morning After Dark is a series of urban landscapes of the formal and informal parts of Cape Town, all of which have been taken in early-morning light, when (mostly) no-one was present.
The moments I have chosen to isolate, when the protagonists of the photographs are absent, was deliberate and something of a departure for me; while recording what is seen, what is shown invokes what or who is not shown. They are the centre of this narrative. The true subjects of the photographs are, in this sense, invisible, yet contained within the photographs.
The images form part of an ongoing book project about urbanization and the marginalized of Cape Town, provisionally entitled The Right to the City, to be published in 2015.

Encounters at the Edge
"David Lurie's acclaimed exhibition 'Encounters at the Edge' was on view at 'Constitution Hill', Johannesburg during April & May, 2013.
This successful exhibition was previously shown at Erdmann Contemporary from July to September 2012 & Bekris Gallery, San Francisco from November 2012 to January 2013. The installation at Constitution Hill included new material not shown at previous exhibitions of this work.
The exhibition centred on architecture, places, spaces, formal and informal dwellings and structures found on the periphery of our urban centres, in this case, Cape Town. This is a photographic journey; Lurie's photographs take the viewer to the edges of our urban sprawl." Heidi Erdmann

The Right To Refuge
In May, 2008 South Africa experienced a wave of vicious, xenophobic attacks against foreign refugees / asylum seekers from Africa. More than 60 people were brutally murdered, tens of thousands of people forcibly evicted from their homes before the authorities stepped in to protect them. Many simply fled the country. This was surely the lowest point in SA's post Apartheid history.

The Long Street Show
The ‘program’ goes out live every day, late afternoon; the set, noted for its Victorian buildings with wrought iron balconies, ethnic restaurants, bars, bookshops and assorted second hand stores, is situated between the Wale Street intersection and the ‘Baths’ at the top of the street. “The Long Street Show”, as all locals know and visitors are informed, is an essential, not-to-be-missed part of our media-saturated Cape Town multi-culture.
